Terms of Use

The terms on which we provide RegioScan and this website. The section on secure erase is the one worth reading twice.

Last updated: 29.08.2026

This text is a working draft and has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer. It describes how the product and this website actually behave, but it does not yet carry legal sign-off.

The Romanian version governs. The Hungarian and English translations are provided for information; in case of discrepancy, the Romanian text prevails.

Who provides RegioScan

RegioScan is developed and provided by REGIO DEVELOPMENT SRL, a company registered in Romania (trade register J26/706/21.04.2021, VAT number RO44161343), with its registered office at Str. Dealul Rotund nr. 5, Sovata, MureÈ™ county. These terms apply to the RegioScan desktop application and to this website.

Your right to use it

RegioScan is provided free of charge, for personal and commercial use alike, under a non-exclusive and revocable right to use it as distributed. It is not open-source software: no licence is granted to redistribute it, to sell it, to modify it or to create derivative works from it, and all rights not expressly granted here are reserved.

You may install it on as many machines as you need, and you may run it in portable mode from removable media.

Third-party components

RegioScan bundles smartmontools (smartctl), which is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2. That component remains under its own licence, which these terms do not restrict, and its source code and licence text are available from us on request as well as from the smartmontools project.

Secure erase destroys data permanently

The secure-erase function instructs the drive to destroy the data it holds. That operation is irreversible. There is no undo, no recycle bin, and no recovery service that can undo a completed erase — that is the entire point of the feature.

Before running it, it is your responsibility to have a backup of anything you intend to keep, to have selected the correct drive, and to be entitled to erase that drive. We cannot verify any of those things from inside the application, and we are not liable for data destroyed by an erase you initiated.

No warranty on drive health

RegioScan reports what a drive says about itself. S.M.A.R.T. attributes are self-reported by the drive's firmware: they can be incomplete, inconsistent between manufacturers, or simply wrong, and a drive can fail while reporting perfect health, or report alarming values and run for years.

Treat RegioScan's output as one input among several, not as a guarantee. Do not use it as the only basis for deciding that data is safe, that a drive may be redeployed, or that a backup is unnecessary. The software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for lost data, lost profit, business interruption or any indirect or consequential loss arising from the use of RegioScan. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

RegioScan Pro

The Pro tier is not yet available. When it is offered, it will be sold under a separate subscription agreement with its own terms, and nothing on this page constitutes an offer to sell it.

Changes

We may update these terms as the product changes. The date at the top of this page always reflects the current version, and substantive changes to the application's behaviour will be described here before they ship rather than afterwards.

Governing law

Romanian law applies. Disputes are settled amicably where possible and, failing that, by the competent courts at our registered office.
